The moving image is the dominant form of communication in the world today, online and through television and cinema. Time Based Media 1 will introduce you to the history and contemporary practice of how artists engage with different time-based media, and how this engagement influences and contributes to contemporary society and culture.
Through developing your ability to formulate and express ideas in this medium you will be able to participate effectively and critically in contemporary society and culture. You will also develop an understanding of the techniques and formal properties of moving imagery and sound, such as lighting (tone, form), composition, scripting, storyboarding, scoring, editing, and the qualities of the image (including color, noise and contrast).
Through lectures and studio sessions (workshops, demonstrations, critiques) you will be directed by staff and technicians, in learning techniques, using technologies and approaches to contemporary practice in this medium.
Through a series of directed practical briefs your skills and understanding of this medium will be developed and broadened. In making your work you will be encouraged to, source information as you need it, plan your production, collaborate and work with others, work in different studio environments (lighting studio, sound studio and animation studio) consider the connections both to other units you are studying, and to the wider cultural sphere. You will learn to apply safe work practices to working with computers and production in a video lighting studio.
Students who have not had prior experience of using cameras or editing software, are encouraged to consider undertaking FSX101 Introduction to Digital Photography and Video: Capture and Editing.
