Note:

Introduction

This unit is a self-directed course of study that will result in a complete body of preparatory work on a theme of your own choosing. This thematic should have a degree of complexity and distinctiveness appropriate to a third year level. This preparatory work will form the basis for a finished body of work to be completed in the second semester. The appropriate visual form and concept is determined by individual experimentation and research. You should explore appropriate techniques and mediums for the expression of your concerns throughout  the semester and then develop and refine these concerns for assessment at the end of the semester. It is expected that these resolved studies address (or show evidence of consideration of) formal concerns such as scale, colour, medium, technique, surface and intention.

This semester is aimed at consolidating research based studio skills. It is structured so that you develop skills in the principles of beginning a body of work; from conception of idea, through to image development, and to resolved study. The unit commences by asking you to articulate your ideas and then allows you the time for experimentation, exploration, development and refinement through image-making and studio based practice. The emphasis is not on completed art works, although you may choose to make some completed works as part of your investigations.
