Introduction

This unit will provide you with an introduction to key developments in Australian contemporary art from 1970 onwards. You will become familiar with the work of a diverse range of artists, art practices and theoretical debates that emerged during this period, and which were sustained through writing, curatorial practice and institutional support.

You will learn about the period by examining key national and international exhibitions such as Perspecta and the Sydney Biennale, and the emergence of postmodern art forms such as installation, environmental art and digital media. The rise of Indigenous art will also be briefly examined. Learning is developed through a series of lectures, presentations, reading group sessions and curatorial exercises.
