Introduction

Formal and technical experimentation, social transgression and political opposition were the hallmarks of the European avant-gardes. This unit will offer a critical evaluation of the concept of the avant-garde, with reference to established theories. Focusing primarily on the inter-war years in Europe, the unit will address avant-garde energies of the twentieth century, with some attention to later neo-avant-garde tendencies, for example, Conceptual Art and the Situationalist Internationals. While the central emphasis will be with the visual production of the historical avant-gardes, literary and performative modes of expression will also be considered, along with continuities and connections with in contemporary practice.
