The unit replaces HGA422 Understanding Contemporary Societies and is taken when a student has already completed the undergraduate unit Understanding Contemporary Societies (HGA302).

Introduction

The Directed Study is a supervised research paper focusing on a theoretical and/or substantive topic area selected by a designated supervisor in consultation with the student. The unit lasts for one semester and consists of EITHER regular meetings and discussions with the supervisor, assessed via a written paper of 4,000 words, OR the auditing of a specified unit available elsewhere in the University.
