Introduction

This unit surveys the writings of the philosophers who stand at the origin of the Western philosophical tradition. This will include works by the philosophers of the Classical period (the Pre-Socratics, Plato, and Aristotle), as well as the schools of the Hellenistic period (Stoicism, Epicureanism and Scepticism) and the Neoplatonists. Students will engage in in-depth, analytical readings of complete and/or select parts of seminal works of the period. These readings will reveal both continuity and discontinuity with the questions addressed by the philosophers studied in HPH202 Modern Philosophy.

The exact content of this unit will rotate from year to year. For more specific information about the content of this unit in any given year, see the Teaching Plan available at the Philosophy homepage.
