Introduction
Tourism is the world's largest industry. More people are involved with tourism, either as a member of a host community, a travel/tourism industry player or as a consumer/tourist than any other industry on earth. This unit explores the history of travel and tourism from the Middle Ages to the present with an emphasis on the period from the Grand Tour in the seventeenth century to the development of mass tourism in the 1960s. The unit studies the ideas and values that have contributed to the origins and historical development of travel and tourism and the ramifications of these mental constructs for modern tourism. The unit ends with a review of the historical forces that have shaped the symbiotic relationship between tourism host and consumer and considerations of these forces for the future of travel and tourism in modern day Australia.
