Introduction

CAA206 is the second of two medical emergency units. This unit will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify, assess and manage the common cardiovascular and respiratory medical emergencies that may be encountered in the out-of-hospital setting. The unit will also explore the epidemiology and pathophysiology of these conditions, as well as clinical challenges that have arisen from contemporary research. CAA206 will build on previous knowledge by affirming the importance of utilising a systematic approach to all patient care, and will prepare you for practice as a beginning practitioner. You will further develop clinical reasoning skills, patient communication, clinical judgement and critical thinking. This unit will be supplemented by short clinical placements in hospital settings where airway management is a routine part of the patient care, such as an operating theatre, a recovery room, or an emergency department.

In order to enrol in CAA206 students must have successfully completed CAA109 and CAA205. CSA236 (Pharmacology in Paramedic Practice) and CXA204 (Bioscience 1) are co-requisite units for CAA206
