Introduction
This unit focuses on developing the students' knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients presenting with acute mental health problems in the out of hospital setting. The historical and epidemiological aspects of mental health care both nationally and internationally will be explored. The unit will discuss the legal and ethical issues involved in mental health care and consider mental health care in specific populations such as child and adolescence, the elderly and indigenous populations. Students will develop skills to deliver patient focussed, evidence based care to patients presenting with both acute and chronic mental health problems.
