Introduction
This unit is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical attachments. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council, AMC, medical student outcomes. This unit is integrated with the programme in the previous year of the course. Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues and will be delivered by a mixture of learning opportunities and will require a self-directed learning approaches. The MBBS curriculum uses the AMC 4 domains as an organising principle under which the outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar), Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner), Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate) and Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader). On completion of CAM518 students receive an IC (Interim Completion) result. The final result for this unit is granted on completion of CAM519.
Note:
Students are required to enrol concurrently in CAM518 and CAM519.
In order to commence workplace learning outside of the University of Tasmania (including clinical placements and visits) students are required to demonstrate compliance with the Faculty of Health and School of Medicine policies relevant to workplace based learning. These include the Police Check Policy and Procedures, Infectious Disease Policy, Code of Conduct and Student Placement Agreement. Students who do not comply with these policies will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. Students who have not complied or are unsure of the policies should seek guidance from the School.

Assessment | Formative Assessment:Portfolio of Learning The formative components of the portfolio may vary across the three clinical schools. There are essential components of the portfolio which are common to all schools and become part of the summative exit assessment. There would normally be a review of portfolios conducted at Clinical School level to monitor progress. OSCE: Formative OSCE assessments will be held during the year. Summative Assessment: All three clinical schools share common summative assessment tasks. This will consist of clinical (OSCE) components and portfolio assessment, including a summative portfolio interview (See handbook for detailed criteria). Students are expected to maintain a PORTFOLIO over the entire year. This includes:- 1. an assessment for each clinical attachment longer than 2 weeks signed off by the supervising senior medical clinician based on performance during the attachment, including performance in any assessment tasks set by the discipline concerned during the attachment; 2. a log-book of clinical skills, in which is recorded information about procedures observed and/or performed during the hospital and community placements, including documentation of competency in specified procedural skills; 100% of the skills must be signed off by the end of 5th year; 3. one reflective piece, totalling a minimum of 2000 and a maximum of 3000 words, that assesses the Domain of Health and Society; 4. completion of a minimum of 10 mini-CEX assessments from at least 4 disciplines with 2 for each major rotation; 5. one (1) long case history of 2000-3000 words addressing chronic illness with a focus on complex therapeutics; evidence of active involvement in Educational Activities and Community Engagement; evidence of participation in integrated case-based learning session and learning tasks; elective and selective assessment forms and reports. Students must achieve a satisfactory rating for each portfolio item. The assessment of the portfolio at interview will consist of questions based on the content of the portfolio. Students are advised to consult their particular Clinical School Guidelines for the deadlines for submission of portfolio components. To PASS the year overall requires: achieving the desired competency in the OSCE stations examined; and obtaining a satisfactory achievement in all elements of the portfolio submission and in the summative portfolio interview. |
