Introduction
This unit provides the student with an understanding of the processes for managing commercial, recreational and traditional fisheries under the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). On the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to describe the status of fisheries in Australia and overseas, explain the need for fisheries management, identify fisheries management issues, outline the principles of fisheries management, describe the components of the fisheries management process and identify the criteria for effective fisheries management.

Requisites
Either JFA542 or JFA528 can be studied by Fisheries Management students however, if both are to be undertaken then JFA542 should be studied prior to JFA528. If JFA528 is successfully completed it is not possible to then study JFA542.
