Marine Navigation JND292

Launceston

Introduction

On completion of this unit, students will have the skills, knowledge and good understanding of navigational charts and relevant publications including information sources regarding the principles of passage planning. Students will acquire the skills to plan and conduct a safe navigational passage, taking into account tidal calculations for different locations on the planned route. They will be able to fix the ship's position through terrestrial plotting to determine the courses and distances on the earth's surface. Position fixing is complemented by observation of celestial bodies, taking into account the astronomical events and their method of computations. Students will also learn application of celestial and terrestrial errors for position fixing. The unit encompasses the application of basic principles of navigation including knowledge required for navigation in high latitudes.

This unit builds on the knowledge gained in the year 1 " Basic Marine Navigation" and meets the learning outcomes set out in Table A -II/1 of STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) and detailed in the Maritime Training Package MAR50315.
