Introduction
View the Sustainable Design for Houses landing page for more information on this unit and the Diploma of Sustainable Living.
This unit will introduce students to principles of sustainable design for housing. The intention of the unit is to develop awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing to inform critical and creative decision making in the design and renovation of houses. It will cover a broad range of issues relevant to multiple climates and situations and will equip students with the knowledge to make judgements about priorities relevant to their own needs.
The unit will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.
The unit will be structured as a series of five modules covering the following areas:
- Overview of housing and sustainability
- Why design matters
- Energy smart design
- Materials: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Upcycle
- Healthy Design
Each module is supported by briefing notes, short lectures, links to further information and learning activities. Students are assessed on their knowledge of content at the end of each module via an online quiz and short answer question.
For the final major assignment, students will develop a design brief integrating a range of sustainable design priorities relevant to the development of a new house or the renovation of an existing house. Students can choose a situation related to their own circumstances or select from a range of provided scenarios.
