Introduction

Logs from the forests are converted into stable and dry timber useful for construction and other uses, through a multi-stage production process largely determined by the character of the initial resource and the intended market for the final product. This unit provides students wishing to produce solid timber effectively with the principles and practices of this process. It introduces the factors that influence efficient processing strategies before dealing with the major stages of processing solid wood boards from breakdown of the log, through to drying, dry-milling and grading. It highlights the importance of quality control and information management to value recovery, especially the reduction of avoidable degrade in both appearance and structural material.
