Introduction

The unit augments the fundamentals of the elastic behaviour of solid bodies acquired in the first year of the course, particularly in KNE113 Statics and KNE216 Civil Engineering 1. It will also lay foundations of modern methods of analysis of structures and elements of machines, and will provide tools for such an analysis. It emphasizes understanding of principles involved and their application to practical situations. The aim is to give students the necessary skills to design, construct and supervise structural and mechanical projects.

Topics include states of 3D and plane stress and strain, strain measurements, energy methods, real work, strain energy and complementary energy, virtual work, energy theorems, calculation of elastic deflections in bar structures, elastic analyses of plane, statically indeterminate structures, force method, slope-deflection method, moment distribution method, plastic analysis of bar structures, buckling of columns and beam-columns, shear flow and shear centre of beams.

Note

Please check that your computer meets the minimum System Requirements if you are attending via Distance/Off-Campus.

Units are offered in attending mode unless otherwise indicated (that is attendance is required at the campus identified). A unit identified as offered by distance, that is there is no requirement for attendance, is identified with a nominal enrolment campus. A unit offered to both attending students and by distance from the same campus is identified as having both modes of study.

Special approval is required for enrolment into TNE Program units.

TNE Program units special approval requirements.

* The Final WW Date is the final date from which you can withdraw from the unit without academic penalty, however you will still incur a financial liability (see withdrawal dates explained for more information).
