Chemistry 1A KRA101

Launceston

This unit is being phased out, no new enrolments are being taken.

Introduction

Chemistry 1A (Semester 1) and Chemistry 1B (Semester 2) are core units for the Chemistry major, Environmental Science and Biomedical Science students and give an introduction to the fundamentals of chemistry. Both units build on the introduction to chemistry given in year 12 and provide a foundation to four of the sub-disciplines of chemistry: inorganic, organic, analytical and physical chemistry.
Chemistry 1A provides students with the fundamental knowledge and concepts in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry (Chemical Bonding and Structure) covers atomic structure, bonding theories, the systematic chemistry of s- and p- block elements. Organic Chemistry covers bonding of carbon, nomenclature of organic compounds, and the properties, preparation and reactivities of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes. It introduces dienes, optical isomerism, alcohols, ethers and organic halogen compounds. Physical Chemistry in this unit involves a study of the behaviour of gases, the solubility of gases and inorganic and organic compounds, chemical and solution equilibria, colligative properties, acids, bases and buffers.
KRA101 and KRA102 emphasize:
The development of an understanding of the underlying concepts in chemistry, so that generalisations regarding the physical and chemical properties of substances can be made.
The development of problem solving ability.
The expansion of the skills necessary to carry out experiments safely and efficiently in the laboratory.

About Census Dates

Learning Outcomes

  • Relate atomic structures to the properties of elements and molecular structures to the properties of compounds.
  • Demonstrate a theoretical and practical knowledge of the occurrence, synthesis, properties and reactions of a number of classes of organic compounds.
  • Demonstrate the relationships between, and the interconversion of, the various types of functional groups, and an understanding of substitution and addition reaction mechanisms.
  • Develop and apply an understanding of the behaviour of gases and the gas laws.
  • Explain the behaviour of electrolyte and non-electrolyte solutions, and the solubility of materials in water.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of general principles governing chemical equilibria, the behaviour of acids, bases and pH buffers in water-based systems.
