Online unit, Optional 1 x 120 minute practical weekly

Introduction

This is a Breadth Unit that develops ability to see with fresh eyes, to be able to discern patterns, and to find meaning in our complex world.  Participants learn how interpretations can be biased by existing paradigms, and by cultural context.  Diverse approaches to observation and representation are developed with an emphasis on critical capacity (is what you see really there?, or, is there something present that you might be missing?).

Creative activities develop skills in drawing by hand, and computer-generated graphics, allowing participants to explore the natural world through real-life people, objects and a wealth of awe-inspiring datasets. The different discipline lenses challenge our perceptions and enable new discoveries to be made with clarity and insight.

In addition to the core material presented online through engaging, didactic videos, students are guided through diverse, practical, creative activities.  Introductory skills are developed in drawing and computer aided visualisation aimed firstly at fostering awareness of the need to 'unsee', to prepare for a new understanding.

Participants create new works, with accompanying interpretation, and gain experience in 'seeing' from alternative perspectives, the exploration for new knowledge, and the communication of such knowledge. Assessment takes place through 3 assignments, which take the form of a visual logbook with accompanying text.
