Tasmanian Medical Orchestra

About the Orchestra

In 2014, the very first orchestra started primarily for staff and students of UTAS School of Medicine.

The course of our medical studies or careers takes up a large proportion of our lives. However it is crucial that a healthy work-life balance is maintained! This orchestra provides an opportunity for the musicians within the College of Health and Medicine to get together regularly and de-stress with music-making!

We aim to keep our music to an intermediate level based on the circumstances of our members (we just don’t have the time to tackle really challenging repertoire!). There are no auditions — the only thing we require is a love of music!

Our Conductor

The TMO has been fortunate enough to be conducted by Alexander Rodrigues. Originally from Brisbane, Alex has a combined Science (Astrophysics) and Arts (Music) degree from UQ and more recently studied conducting at UTAS, where he is now beginning a PhD. He has conducted many local and international orchestras including the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Hobart Chamber Orchestra, Derwent Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Sinfonietta, and Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra.

Want to help?

We also welcome people willing to offer their skills in assisting with the orchestra’s organisation – maintaining member list, rehearsal planning, publicity, obtaining music, librarian, etc.
