Robin is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the University College and the Course Coordinator for the Associate Degree in Applied Science. Her background is diverse with research interests in both Aquaculture physiology and nutrition as well as educational pathways into higher education.
Biography
Robin has a diverse background with a PhD in Aquaculture Nutrition and has experience working on industry research priorities. Prior to her move to Tasmania to start her PhD in 2002, Robin worked for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA, US) developing methods for new marine species in aquaculture. Robin completed her PhD in 2007 and in 2009, Robin was awarded The Australian Agricultural Industries Young Innovators and Scientist Awards to undertake research on oxygen consumption with the salmon industry.
In 2013, she moved into education pathways and her most recent research is focused on educational attainment, parental engagement, and pathways to higher education particularly from regional and rural areas.
In 2017, Robin joined the University College to coordinate the Associate Degree in Applied Science, this role enabled her to draw together her two areas of interest, educational attainment and science.
General Responsibilities
Robin is the Course Coordinator for the Associate Degree in Applied Science. This degree has two specialisations for students to choose from, Fermentation Science and Separation Processes or Aquaculture.

Robin is the Course Coordinator for the Associate Degree in Applied Science. Students can choose one of the following specialisations:

Robin’s recent research aligns to the University’s research theme of Creativity, Culture and Society. Her research interests include understanding how rural and regional communities can influence attitudes about higher education access and participation. This research has implications for educational outreach, community engagement and student outcomes in higher education. Robin also had research in the Environment, Resources and Sustainability theme while working with the impacts of temperature and oxygen concentrations on the physiology of Atlantic Salmon.

Informing key influencers of low SES regional, rural and remote students education and career pathway choices: a whole community approach (2019 - 2020)$250,000
- Description
- This project aims to design, trial and evaluate whole community, place-based, coordinated career and education pathway information and support systems. It will establish career and education pathway working parties in each of three rural communities in two states, each resourced with a pathway broker. Working parties will include people from groups research suggests are key influencers of higher education (and other education) and career pathway choices: families, school staff, employers/industry, and university outreach and other personnel, along with other key stakeholders such as local government. The working parties and their communities will be made aware of a suite of programs and interventions that have been found to be successful in informing and influencing key influencers of student pathway choice. Working parties and communities will be assisted through a process lead by the researchers to select and/or modify programs and interventions that align with community needs. These will then be trialled in their community and evaluated.

Regional communities influences on equity participation in higher education (2017 - 2018)$39,995
- Description
- Research investigating the impact of regional community factors on higher education (HE) aspiration and participation typically takes a deficit-based approach. This project takes an innovative strength-based approach to investigating the impact of regional community assets and factors that enhance equity student participation and success. A mixed methods explanatory sequential design uses data from the Higher Education Student Collection, Regional Australia Institute Insight indices, international literature, a survey of regional students at selected universities and community case studies. These data will inform understanding of community factors and develop recommendations and guidelines for policy and practice to improve regional equity HE participation.

Parents Matter: Career pathway training for parents (2017 - 2018)$79,987
- Description
- Parents are key influencers of children's post year 10 aspirations and pathways. The project provides a small number of 'lead' parents/carers from disadvantaged communities with knowledge and access to resources about careers in Tasmanian industries of the future (food, tourism, advanced manufacturing, health), education pathways to those careers, and skills to assist other parents/families better understand and support their children's career and education aspirations. Building on our Tasmanian Community Fund project, we will provide VET recognised training to 12-20 parents from Launceston's northern suburbs, George Town and Dorset. They will be recruited through schools and community organisations. Lead parents will be trained to run events for other parents held in association with school careers events, relevant My Education activities and other events such as Science Week and TasTAFE and UTAS open days. Events will assist parents/families to engage in career and pathway planning discussions with their children and education providers.

Articulating curriculum design principles for open access (2016)$39,000
- Description
- The project will articulate the principles underlying curriculum design in open access enabling programs at three Australian universities. The project is timely with increased student enrolments in enabling or bridging programs and growing numbers of university and non-university providers delivering such programs. The project addresses a gap in knowledge as all previous studies or funding have examined curriculum in undergraduate and postgraduate studies only. The project aims to: i. Examine the curriculum design approaches in three university enabling programs across Australia; ii. Articulate the guiding principles underlying curriculum design in these enabling programs; and iii. In the light of these principles, facilitate the development of a strategic discussion on good practice in enabling curriculum design at a national level.

Equipping parents to support their children's aspiration: what works? (2016)$56,620
- Description
- parents, report that they want 'the best' for their children's future. Getting a good education is a part of the aspiration of most parents, regardless of SES status. Parents from mid and high SES backgrounds usually have 'educational cultural capital' to support their children's educational aspiration. This means they can confidently access information they need about possible education pathways within and beyond school, and know where to find out about financial and other support resources available to facilitate access to higher education. There is a strong theoretical basis for the effectiveness of early outreach to children and families. However, evidence as to the nature and features of programs that are most effective in engaging low SES parents in building their children's educational aspirations is limited. This project addresses that evidence gap. It will: *build on partners' combined experience and international literature to identify features of parent engagement and information programs and resources that are cost efficient and effective in informing and supporting low SES parents' aspirations for their children's participation in higher education;*produce a web resource for institutions' use in design of parent engagement and information programs and resources that are effective in informing and supporting low SES parents' aspirations for their children's participation in higher education.

Reskilling the manufacturing workforce and developing capabilities for the future (2015)$50,000
- Description
- Australia's future in the next three to five years depends on a stronger workforce with more qualified engineers and associated professionals with the high level skills capable of delivering the needs of growing industries such as advanced manufacturing and the maritime sector. In recent years, Australia's 'traditional' manufacturing industries like construction, automotive and forestry have seen a decline in business leaving much of the current workforce looking to utilise their technical skills and knowledge elsewhere. Hence, providing pathways that allow the reskilling or upskilling of the current workforce, to develop more complex skills required for future industries becomes essential. This project will initially focus on the engineering and associated skills required for the growing Tasmanian advanced manufacturing and maritime industry. It will investigate what pathways exist or may be required in higher education and vocational education and training to meet these needs and will serve as a pilot for a full application examining this nationally.
