TILES Director receives the 2019 CALE Award for her outstanding contributions and achievements

CALE Research Award R JulianProfessor Roberta Julian, TILES Director, was awarded the College of Arts, Law and Education (CALE) Research Award at a celebration function in Hobart, on 15 October 2019.

This special award is in recognition of Prof Julian’s achievements as a researcher, academic leader, mentor and the foundation Director of TILES over the past two-decades at the University of Tasmania.

The citation notes her ‘outstanding contributions to research of the highest quality, including innovation and impact, mentoring and early career researcher development, and community engagement’.

Prof Julian’s contributions in research were recognized, particularly in forensic studies policy and practice and a wide range of evidence-based research which has had an impact on law enforcement practices. Prof Julian is the foundation Director of TILES, and under her leadership in 2018 the Institute celebrated fifteen years of innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary research that has been recognised locally, nationally and internationally.

At the CALE Award function, Prof Roberta Julian delivered an inspiring acceptance speech in which she highlighted the importance of collaboration in successful applied research.

“Collaboration lies at the heart of my own research and indeed, is central to the model of research at TILES. ….. I strongly believe that it is people – and the relationships we build with them - either in the short or long term – that have created the environment for our successful research activities and outcomes and impact.

All TILES researchers are engaged in interdisciplinary research with colleagues in various UTAS colleges, as well as a wide range of industry partners and the broader community. The innovative, collaborative, applied research that TILES’ reputation is built upon would not be possible without their energy and commitment.

I would like to acknowledge and thank my colleagues for their hard work and invite others to view the (this) TILES website".

TILES staff and students extend their warmest congratulations to Prof Julian on receiving this special award.
