Literature, Multimodality and Media EPR314

Introduction

This unit is centred on the significant role of images and visual culture in children’s lives. It has a strong emphasis on literary multimodal texts, visual literacy and sensory literacies. Multimodal texts will include picture books, graphic novels, television, film, drama and performance, computer games, digital worlds, virtual and augmented reality storytelling, and social media platforms. You will further your knowledge commenced in core English units to examine the potential of multimodal texts and consider effective English and literacy pedagogies for progressing students’ reading, viewing and writing/composing achievement. You will also consider how to support students to become critical consumers and producers of multimodal and media texts, in a world where authenticity and reality is not always clear. This unit also requires you to develop skills in listening, speaking, viewing and representing through engagement with texts and each other.
