School of Paramedicine

Welcome to the University of Tasmania’s School of Paramedicine, the first of its kind in Australia.

Paramedics are at the fore of healthcare delivery. From providing life-saving care in critical conditions to navigating diverse medical situations with confidence, a career in Paramedicine is an opportunity to make a difference where it matters most.

The School of Paramedicine responds directly to health workforce training needs through undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Using the latest research and a patient-centred approach, these courses offer opportunities to build your knowledge, skills, and confidence in a unique learning environment. Study with us

We offer a two-year fast-track Bachelor of Paramedicine degree taught in Hobart and Sydney.  This degree allows you to work in complex, dynamic and sometimes extreme environments to deliver high-level patient care.

Within this course, you will undertake Professional Experience Placement (PEP) which can include a placement with an ambulance service, an aged care facility, other health service providers, and international placement opportunities.

If you are currently a registered practicing paramedic, consider our Paramedicine Conversion Pathway, designed to help you upgrade your existing diploma qualification.

Study in the conversion pathway provides recognition for prior learning and recognition of current competency as a paramedic.  If you qualify, the conversion pathway is fully online, flexible and designed to let you study from anywhere while balancing your life and work commitments.

Clinical Placements

The university will provide your details to the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (Ahpra) at census.

All students will need to complete supervised clinical placements with NSW Ambulance or Ambulance Tasmania and other health agencies. You may be required to undertake placements in metro, rural or regional areas. Students are responsible for travel, accommodation and living expenses.

For further information about placement and compliance requirements, please refer to specific compliance requirements.

International Placements

An international placement opportunity is provided in your final year of study. These placements allow you to experience a different culture, lifestyle and healthcare system while gaining practical experience in another country. Previous opportunities have taken place in the UK, US and developing countries in a humanitarian context. Locations may change each year depending on availability. Expressions of interest will be called the year prior.

Partnerships

Paramedicine has developed strong relationships with key industry stakeholders across Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales. As well as providing tertiary education to the Royal Australian Navy, the university is the preferred provider for post-employment education for NSW Ambulance as it trains the surge workforce required to manage current healthcare workforce shortages.

Research

The foundations of research are a focus of our undergraduate degree, providing an opportunity for students to continue their studies and explore research opportunities.

Students may then wish to undertake an honours program, as a pathway to a higher degree by research, such as:
