Eliah’s journey into the gaming industry

Study

Eliah Woolley is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Honours student who has previously completed a Bachelor of ICT and a Bachelor of Visual Communications at the University of Tasmania. Eliah shared with us their passion for gaming and how they got interested in the industry.

My interest in the gaming industry is from the fact that I grew up playing video games and I was always interested in how the characters were made, how the environment was made.

They got to explore this interest further when they took a subject in college where they created a little game. This experience brought to light everything they enjoyed about games and the creation process. They also discovered the different jobs available in the gaming industry, while studying at the University of Tasmania.

One of the super fun units that Eliah took was an augmented reality unit where they worked with another student to create an experience in virtuality. The aim of the experience was to help people doing physiotherapy or people going to the dentist who have anxiety around that.

Eliah is also part of a Dungeons and Dragons group where they are the dungeon master.

Dungeons and Dragons is basically a tabletop role-playing game. It’s actually a really interesting way to see how you actually interact with other people. A lot of it is creating a story together and having fun and, you know, doing combat but also doing role play.

Eliah gets a lot of inspiration from being on the campus in Hobart. They get to see all the different buildings and facilities, which helps get their creative mind flowing.

In their third year of ICT, Eliah got the opportunity to work on projects with outside companies. 'This is a great way to network and see all the new opportunities that are happening in the industry. The University brings in outside companies and students can actually work on those projects and help actually create solutions to problems that have been put forth by those companies and that is a really good way to network', Eliah says.
