Nursing students broaden their horizons as part of study experience

Newsroom

A group of University of Tasmania Nursing students will broaden their horizons this month and experience healthcare overseas.

For the first time, 25 Bachelor of Nursing students will have the opportunity to undertake practical placements in rural areas.

Eleven students will travel to India, and 14 will travel to Nepal on Saturday, 8 April where over a three-week period they will work alongside medical staff in some of each country’s most remote villages.

“This is a really unique opportunity for Nursing students to undertake their practical program in an international setting,” School of Nursing lecturer and trip coordinator Ann Marie Brown said.

“We have students from Hobart, Launceston, Sydney and the North West Coast taking part in this program, which has been partly funded by the New Colombo Plan.

“The students will have the chance to experience nursing in a different healthcare system, traveling to remote villages and hospitals to work alongside nursing and medical staff.”

The New Colombo Plan is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to study and undertake internships in the region.
