A partnership between Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania (MRC Tas) and the University of Tasmania (UTAS) will see the two organisations come together to collaborate on research projects, professional development, knowledge sharing and use of resources.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) builds on the existing partnership between MRC Tas and the University of Tasmania and will help to strengthen the evidence base to support best practice when working with people from refugee and migrant backgrounds.

“While we’ve worked closely with the University of Tasmania for many years, formalising this relationship helps demonstrate both organisations’ commitment to building a strong, vibrant, culturally inclusive Tasmania,” said MRC Tas Chief Executive Officer Dr Gillian Long.

Research opportunities will focus on social equity, industry sustainability, social change, and policy development that benefit the community and help to solve key societal issues.

"MRC Tas values the opportunities which will arise from this agreement, including opportunities for joint research, student placements, professional development, volunteering and sharing of resources. Together, we will help overcome barriers for members of Tasmania’s culturally diverse communities and develop a more equitable society,” said Long.

The MoU will provide professional development opportunities for both MRC Tas and UTAS staff, as well as integrated learning opportunities for students across several courses. This will help to develop capacity in areas of need and upskill students and staff.

Professor Kate Darian-Smith, Executive Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Arts, Law and Education at UTAS, said the MoU would help both organisations meet the needs of the Tasmanian community.

“This partnership is about understanding and supporting diversity. Our students and staff will have the opportunity to broaden their perspectives, enriching their study, teaching and research. We look forward to the possibilities the partnership will provide for us to make a difference together meeting the needs of our diverse Tasmanian community,” said Darian-Smith.

For Professor Stuart Crispin, Executive Dean of the College of Business and Economics, this agreement reflects the importance of industry partnerships and their power to enhance the lives of Tasmanians.

"We are proud to work with Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania and to formally recognise the strong commitment by both organisations to work together to provide opportunities for students, staff and the community, including placements, internships, and collaborative research projects in helping to build a more inclusive and equitable society," said Crispin.

The MoU will also see both organisations adopt industry informed views and knowledge to develop and refine courses of work placement practices to address the needs of the community and Tasmania. This will initially be focused on allied health, social work and social policy, teaching, leadership and management in the sector.
