Introduction
The purpose of this unit is to develop your skills in reading, writing, listening to and speaking English at undergraduate university level with attention to academic vocabulary and common text types. You will read textbook sections and other material from the core courses you are taking and analyse them for discourse, syntactic and lexical features. You will then develop appropriate written and spoken responses to spoken and written texts. You will also develop transferable skills in summarising, paraphrasing, referencing, evaluating, planning, editing, and research.

Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of the main ideas and supporting details in a range of spoken and written texts.
- Critically analyse a range of written texts.
- Participate effectively in sustained spoken academic discourse including discussion about the research process.
- Create extended academic written texts that present logical and coherent argument and demonstrate paraphrasing, summarising and referencing skills.
- Use grammar, syntax and vocabulary with consistent accuracy to support effective communication.
