Chemistry of Materials EUS008
Introduction
This unit equips international students preparing to undertake an undergraduate course at the University of Tasmania with foundation knowledge to undertake first year Chemistry. It can be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry units at the University of Tasmania. It covers the subject matter covered in Year 12 chemistry and provides a basic understanding of scientific terms and notation used within the subject.
This unit explores matter and the relationship between chemistry and the natural world. It covers properties of acids and bases, gases, liquids and solids, electrochemistry, batteries, corrosion and organic chemistry. The course will further develop problem solving skills and introduce laboratory safety and provide an opportunity for students to develop laboratory skills.
The course will consist of lecture/tutorial style classes, in which theoretical foundations will be established and laboratory classes, in which practical skills will be developed.

Learning Outcomes

- Apply chemical principles and theories to predict and explain the chemical and physical properties of substances, their structure and the interactions that take place between them.
- Display competence in working in an individual and team environment both within a learning space and laboratory space.
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills from experimental and theoretical approaches.
