Physics 1 EUS009

Introduction

This subject aims to provide students with an understanding of basic physical concepts in classical mechanics. Understanding of motion, force, energy and momentum is instrumental study of other key areas of physics, such as: mechanics, electric and magnetic fields, waves, atoms and nuclei. This course also aids students in analysing and synthesising information, problem solving and scientific experimentation. This unit, combined with EUS010 Physics 2, is broadly aligned with the syllabus material covered in the Senior Secondary Physics 5C course and is designed to enable students to succeed in first year Physics and Engineering courses. The course will be particularly useful to students contemplating taking a degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering or Science at the University of Tasmania.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fundamental physical laws and principles, such as: Newton’s Laws of Motion, Equations of Motion, Gravitation, Circular Motion, Conservation of Momentum, Energy, Work and Power.
  • Conceptualise a problem and apply suitable formulae, graphs and diagrams to describe a physical situation and evaluate solutions.
  • Apply vectors to solve problems in one and two dimensions.
  • Use experimental techniques and analyse data to confirm laws and make predictions.
