Introduction
English for Tertiary Studies 1 prepares you for university life through exploration of academic culture and through the development of academic skills. Through an exploration of academic culture you will gain an understanding of the expectations of studying at university. Areas covered include the role of debate and argument in the development of knowledge, developing your own voice, the importance of maintaining academic integrity and the academic expectations of different types of written texts and group work. Academic skills developed include writing tertiary - level short answers and research reports, referencing and paraphrasing techniques to avoid plagiarism, identifying and appropriately using sources of knowledge, listening to lectures and note - taking.

Learning Outcomes

- Give an oral presentation which adheres to academic conventions including structure, style and referencing.
