Introduction

High quality visitor engagement plays a critical role in enhancing the overall visitor experience.Tourism is a customer service industry that inspires visitors to explore a destination through its cultural and natural heritage, and other significant attributes. The ability to identify, create and communicate engaging and authentic visitor experiences is a fundamental skill for all those in the tourism industry. In this unit you will examine key concepts and practices in visitor engagement as it applies to tourism in your local region, and develop your understanding of the role that engagement plays in enhancing the visitor experience.

Activities will include engaging in your own ‘visitor experience’ to analyse and reflect on how this experience may be perceived by the ‘visitor’. You will propose a visitor experience that will be distinctive to your local region.

In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.

You will be introduced to:

  • a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice
  • principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios
  • reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations
  • ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry
