Introduction

Digital platforms and social technologies influence the success of tourism-engaged businesses and organisations. The interaction of humans and technology provide professionals with exciting opportunities to engage visitors. This unit will investigate emerging disruptive technologies andhow they may be usedto build visitor numbers and enhance the visitor experience across tourism-engaged sectors. Advances in technology give rise to new forms of visitor engagement. You will undertake practical activities and experiences to investigate key concepts such as influences and impacts of digital platforms and social technologies on the tourism industry. You will analyse current and emerging technologies in the digital visitor economy and develop skills relevant to the industry. This will include investigating innovative practices and their application, and communicating potential outcomes to industry. This unit offers relevant skills, knowledge, and attributes for an array of sectors engaged in tourism such as hospitality, events, sport and recreation, arts and culture, transport, and agriculture.

In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences.

You will be introduced to:

- discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences

- concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others

- the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate toinnovative and entrepreneurial practice

- the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice

You will exercise self-awareness, initiative and judgement to manage yourself and professional relationships effectively. The application of tacit knowledge and capabilities will be reflected in a Practice Manual.
