Introduction

You will be introduced to a range of design approaches and selected toolsets that are used in contemporary manufacturing and equipment design. This includes using design thinking approaches to envisage, conceptualise, test and evaluate solutions to realistic problems. Your learning will be firmly grounded in guided practical work to produce designs in response to a design brief. You will also develop 2D and 3D computer assisted design (CAD) skills to produce 3D printed parts and assemblies or VR prototypes. The skills developed in this unit enable you to contribute to a team-based project. You will therefore begin to reflect on and develop your collaboration, teamwork, observation, communication, planning, critical and creative thinking and problem-solving skills in the context of equipment design practices.

You will be introduced to:

  • a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice
  • principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios
  • reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations
  • ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry
