Foundations of Arts Education EMT552
Introduction
This unit will introduce you to key theories and research praxis in the field of arts education. Beginning with an exploration of the philosophical underpinnings of the role and value of the arts in civil society, you will examine the research evidence of the impact of quality arts education on academic, personal and social learning. You will investigate key issues in the historical development of at least two arts education disciplines (i.e. dance, drama, music, media arts or visual arts) and become familiar with current discourses and debates as articulated in key Australian and international arts education journals. By the end of the unit, you will have developed an understanding of the foundations of this field and familiarity with contemporary approaches to scholarship in arts curriculum, pedagogy, and interdisciplinary critical studies.
