Introduction
In this second English unit, you will examine the three strands of the Australian Curriculum: English – language, literacy and literature. The unit will be centred on the range of texts typically encountered in children’s lives. An emphasis of study will be on notions of socio-cultural contexts and their impact on the ways different text types or genres construct meanings; the manner in which texts vary with respect to field, tenor and mode, the features of written texts, and the teaching of text types and grammar. The unit will also involve critical studies of children’s literature, including myths, legends, fairy tales, picture books, novels, poetry and film. There will also be a strong focus on the pedagogical imperatives underpinning the English curriculum – including explicit teaching, creative and critical approaches to English pedagogy, catering for diverse learners, sequencing lessons for cumulative learning, and assessment.
