Introduction

This unit is the first of a pair of units (ESH125 + ESH325) that present the theory, methods and practice of teaching mathematics (and teaching for numeracy) in the secondary years. ESH125 introduces students to the curriculum associated with teaching secondary mathematics to children aged 12 - 15 years. The unit models and provides opportunities for students to engage with rich tasks, group work, problem solving and how to differentiate the curriculum for learners using examples from across all domains of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Students will reflect upon their own experiences of learning mathematics in secondary school and consider the issues associated with links across the mathematics curriculum. The aim of this unit is to build up students' confidence in their knowledge of the content of the curriculum.

The broad aims for both of these units are to:

  1. Develop personal competence, understanding and confidence with the mathematical concepts, knowledge and skills that are essential for the curriculum at the level of teaching anticipated.
  2. Acquire knowledge and develop skills relating to the progression and development of the topics in the Mathematics curriculum from Year 7 to Year 12.
  3. Engage in discussions and develop opinions about current issues in Mathematics and numeracy education and the secondary years of schooling.

Build understanding of variations in students' progression through the curriculum.
