Introduction

This unit serves as an introduction to the theory, methods and practices of teaching science in the lower secondary years of schooling (years 7 to 10). Emphasis is placed on contemporary issues and approaches impacting on the teaching of science. Relevant curriculum documents are introduced and used to prepare students for planning and assessment requirements of secondary teaching. Formative assessment practices are modelled and will be evaluated.  Students will learn about safety considerations, risk management and the role of good organisation in supervising practical work in the science laboratory and fieldwork. As well, a focus on the development of information, communication and technology skills that enhance science learning will be identified and practiced.  Students are expected to understand and perform inclusive teaching techniques that foster a student-centred, inquiry based approach to science learning. The importance of developing scientific literacy for all students underpins this unit.
