Introduction

Provides a course of vocal, instrumental or compositional study, covering both technique and repertoire. Composition students will be guided in the development of an individual style of composition in a variety of musical genres. A program of study will be established on an individual basis with regard to the needs and stage of development of each student, a wide range of styles and idioms being introduced. Emphasis will be placed on progressive development throughout the duration of the course.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Plan your practice sessions effectively.
  2. Follow musical directions from lecturers.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency on your chosen instrument in a closed-panel performance of 15-20 minutes duration.
  4. Meet administrative requirements and conform to rehearsal/performance protocols and etiquette.
  5. Composition specialisation: Demonstrate knowledge of the technical features (instrumentation, pitch, rhythm, harmonic language and formal concepts) for written exercises through the study of specific musical techniques and concepts, and recommended musical works.
  6. Composition specialisation: Begin to use compositional craft as specified by project requirements to convey musical ideas.
  7. Composition specialisation: Solve problems by interacting with performers and composers.

Minimum of 3 hours contact weekly comprising the following activities: 1hr specialist lesson (group and/or one-to-one tuition), 90 minute performance class and/or group tutorials, 2-3 hour ensemble rehearsal
