Introduction

Building upon the foundation of Time Based Media 1 the specific aspects of practice and process in Sound and Documentary will be explored in greater depth.

You will explore Sound as a medium and a material, through a series of in-class exercises and workshops in listening, experiencing and constructing physical sound environments.  You will collaborate in developing sound installations and through a brief develop and refine sound that enhances and accompanies moving images.

Traditionally documentary is the process of presenting facts objectively to report on a subject.  In this unit you will explore the concept and practice of 'expanded documentary' as it is incorporated within contemporary art. This expanded notion of documentary, sometimes referred to as 'post-documentary' seeks to challenge ideas of truth, objectivity and incorporates notions of fiction, performance and merges the documentary with other forms of filmmaking, animation and art practice.  Through researching and producing your own short documentary you will continue to develop your moving image production skills.  Collaboration and experimentation with process, technique and storytelling will be encouraged as you develop your work.

The emphasis in this unit is on exploring these aspects of temporal media and their associated processes and techniques, with a view to developing an innovative and inquiring practice. You will continue to develop your knowledge of the broader practices by other artists in Time Based Media, as well as some of the critical discourses related to the medium, and to refine your own critical skills through group critique.
