Visual Communication as a discipline incorporates many sub-disciplines such as design for print, illustration, title design, identity and branding, exhibition, environmental graphics, way finding, public commissions – just to name a few.

Increasingly designers are choosing to craft a hybrid practice, which is open and versatile. Working towards a career as a professional designer it's important to have experience and knowledge of the potential breadth of the field.

This studio will further extend your critical, analytical, creative, practical and technical skills, enabling you to produce innovative design concepts. You are encouraged to explore different mediums and methods while integrating theoretical knowledge through research. Study of this unit involves projects that present concrete opportunities to evaluate, question and think critically about the purpose and role of design within local and global communities. Projects address the principles of visual representation, media and processes, typography, and encourage you to develop an understanding of the social and professional implications of design.

In undertaking this unit students build on their acquired skills to explore design design practice through a range of media and techniques, whilst further developing their conceptual approach.

Students will be guided through more in depth approaches to observation and reflection, connecting their studio-based experiences with contextual knowledge of contemporary, critical discourse.

Students are expected to become increasingly competent in their ability to experiment, develop and realize resolved work, to identify their individual expression and to critically engage with design.

Study of this unit will involve guided individual and collaborative investigation.
