Creative Writing: Professional Practice HEN318
Introduction
This unit prepares student writers to submit their works of fiction and creative non-fiction for publication. Lectures will focus on publishing outlets and opportunities, conditions in the contemporary publishing industry, publishers' expectations, layout, copy-editing and editorial polish. An assessment task, the Publishing Report, will enable students to identify and explore potential avenues for publication. In workshops, students will receive critical feedback on their own work and refine their skills in critiquing peer work.

Learning Outcomes
- Draft and redraft a sustained work of creative writing
- Edit written work to achieve precise meaning at sentence level.
- Edit written work so that it accords with supplied industry guidelines.
- Recognise the publication context of contemporary works of fiction and make discerning judgements, based on knowledge of the Australian literary culture, about possible opportunities to gain an audience for your work.
- Provide relevant and constructive criticism to peer writers on their creative work.

| Teaching Pattern | HEN318 does not follow a standard teaching pattern. The release of lecture/learning materials and the timing of workshops have been carefully scheduled to allow for relevant information to be distributed at the optimal times and to allow students to have sufficient time to draft and redraft their creative work before successive rounds of peer discussion. |
