Introduction
The unit HGW611 Direct Practice 2 consists of two parts:
Working with individuals and families: builds on the professional communication skills and techniques taught in HGW517 and integrates them with an understanding how to respond to social suffering by undertaking psychosocial assessments and doing social casework. There is a focus on solutions and strengths focused approaches. Reference is made throughout the workshops to age, gender, cultural background and agency context, emphasising their relevance for practice. Ethical issues and the principles of social justice are addressed throughout.
Group work: builds on group work theory taught in HGW517. Group work is used in this unit as a strategy for addressing social inclusion by social workers practising in culturally responsive and empowering ways. Students join a number of groups both as leaders and as participants and complete a detailed analysis of one group work session. Group work sessions are experiential and based on a range of topics relevant to socially inclusive practice in social work.
There will be a strong emphasis in the teaching of this unit on how you demonstrate care in all contexts of your practice and towards all people. You will be required to critically reflect on and respond to issues of power in your practice.
