Introduction

This unit is a survey of selected key texts in Japanese film and anime from the 1930s to the present. Attention is given to major film directors such as Mizoguchi, Ozu, and Kursosawa,  in addition to a number of anime directors such as Miyazaki. Issues such as gender representation, the relationship between tradition and modernity and the presence of nationalism in cinema will be considered. All films have English sub-titles and the unit is taught in English.

Students with no Japanese language background are very welcome to enrol.
