Introduction
This unit examines Australia's historical and political connections within the Pacific world. Taking an 'oceans connect' approach to world history the unit considers Australia within the dynamic regional spheres of the southwestern Pacific and trans-Tasman worlds, as well as the broader Pacific Rim. It considers Australia's imperial, political and cultural ties and ruptures within this region, both as a colonised land and as a colonising power. Importantly it takes into account the experiences of Australian indigenous peoples, Pacific peoples and Europeans and their interactions from 1800 to the present. Covering issues of exploration and trade, migration, empire, colonial alliances, the exploitation of Pacific lslander labour, connections with Aotearoa New Zealand, ANZAC, the 20th century Pacific war and ANZUS, the unit will assist students to develop an understanding of the historical, economic, political and cultural ties between Australia and its own region.
