Introduction

How can an understanding of history enhance our understanding of gender? How can an understanding of gender enhance our understanding of history? This unit investigates gender and society in a variety of historical contexts, including: classical Greece and Rome; medieval through to Enlightenment Europe; and a range of nineteenth- and twentieth-century contexts, including Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

The unit will examine continuity, change, and variety in the ways that gendered constructions are made and mobilised in different historical contexts.  With a focus on the critical intersections of gender, race, and class, the unit will explore the different ways in which gender as a category of historical analysis can be used to provide historical insights. Students of Gender Studies and History, in particular, will find this a valuable unit.

On-campus Hobart: 1 x 2 hr lecture weekly and 1 x 1 hr tutorial weekly.

On-campus Launceston: 1 x 2 hr lecture weekly via MyLO and 1 x 1 hr tutorial weekly via video conference

Off-campus: 1 x 2 hr electronic lecture via MyLO weekly and 1 x 1 hr online tutorial discussion via MyLO weekly.

Assessment

On campus: 1000 word reflective essay (20%), 3 online quizzes (30%), 2500 word research essay (40%), tutorial participation (10%).

Off campus: 1000 word reflective essay (20%), 3 online quizzes (30%), 2500 word research essay (40%), online unit participation (10%).
