Introduction
This unit is available only to students admitted to the Second Class Honours stream of a Law Honours degree. The unit allows students to undertake a sustained piece of research as the principal piece of assessment in a LAW elective unit. There are no classes for the specific unit LAH601; rather, teaching takes place through an elective unit. Students self-select an elective unit as the foundation to the research project. The research project may be on any topic falling within the scope of the chosen elective unit. The work must be completed during the semester in which the student is enrolled. The resulting research project is to be 5,000 words in length (inclusive of references) and must demonstrate cognitive skills that will highlight the capacity to review, analyse, and evaluate legal issues with intellectual independence. Students must be eligible for Second-class honours to enrol in this unit. Under the Honours degree rules, students must complete LAH601 Honours Research Paper in order to be eligible to graduate with second class honours.

| Teaching Pattern | Tuition pattern will follow the pattern of the elective unit selected by the student. Second-class eligible (eligibility finalised as at immediately prior to the start of the final semester) students will enrol in LAH6XX and nominate an elective unit on offer in that semester to provide the framework for the student’s research project. The student may choose any elective unit, conduct the study of the elective unit, and replace the major assessment task in that unit with a 5,000 word research paper on a topic of their choosing within the scope of that elective unit. |

| Assessment | Students will complete the assessment prescribed in their LAW elective unit of choice, replacing the major assessment in the elective unit with a 5000 word research paper.
