Ethics and Professional Responsibility LAS604
Introduction
This practice-based Practical Legal Training subject builds on students’ knowledge towards advanced theoretical and technical understandings about ethics and professional responsibility in legal practice, including trust and office accounting. The unit considers strategies and techniques to help to reduce the prospect of a disciplinary complaint being brought against legal practitioners, how to respond professionally if a complaint is made, and how to build the confidence to voice ethical concerns in practice. Additionally, the unit focuses on how to maintain trust and general account records according to law and good practice.

Learning Outcomes
- Formulate strategies and techniques that reduce the prospect of a disciplinary complaint in legal practice.
- Refer professional standards to make considered and reasoned decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas relating to disputed actions and situations of potential conflict.
- Manage trust and general account records according to law and good practice.
- Pursue opportunities for pro bono contributions and other legal support provided by professional or community organisations in order to facilitate access to justice.
