Note:

Enrolment requires a GPA of 6.0 or better (Distinction grade average). Students wishing to enrol in this unit must first consult the Honours Co-ordinator in the Faculty of Law.

Introduction

Allows students to undertake a sustained piece of research under the supervision of a member of staff. There are no classes as such; teaching takes place through the interaction between the student and staff member. Students select their own research topic in consultation with, and subject to the approval of, a staff member. The research may be on any topic subject to approval and the availability of staff supervision. The work must be completed during the semester in which the student is enrolled. The paper is 14,000 words in length (inclusive of references) and must demonstrate cognitive skills that will highlight the capacity to review, analyse, and evaluate with intellectual independence a research project. The student will also exercise critical thinking in developing a new understanding of an area of law and communicate a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge and ideas. Students must have a Distinction grade average in their law units (Law-only GPA of 6 or more) to be eligible for enrolment in this unit. Under the Honours degree rules, students must complete LAW679 Supervised Research Paper in order to be eligible to graduate with first class honours. It also advances students' achievement of all threshold learning outcomes for law (knowledge, ethics, thinking skills, research, communication, and self-management).
