This unit is divided into five modules:

• lawyers' skills, which includes interviewing clients, advocacy, writing letters, drafting other documents and negotiating settlements,

• competency, ethics and professional responsibility, which includes acting ethically, discharging the legal duties and obligations of legal practitioners, complying with professional conduct rules, complying with fiduciary duties and avoiding conflicts of interest

• problem solving skills, which includes analysing facts and identifying issues, analysing law, providing legal advice and generating solutions and strategies

• work management and business skills, which includes managing personal time, managing risk, managing files, keeping client informed and working co-operatively

• workplace experience. During the Course trainees spend three weeks in a private law firm, government department or other organisation employing legal practitioners. During this period trainees attend the Magistrates' Court and have the opportunity to 'shadow' a Magistrate for the day.

The instruction in this unit is delivered as part of the other practice units in the Course. In addition trainees participate in: a client interviewing program conducted with real clients in partnership with   the Hobart Community Legal Service; an intensive skills workshop conducted by the Leo Cussen Institute; a risk management workshop; and intensive advocacy workshop conducted by Professor Peter Lyons, an internationally recognised, specialist advocacy trainer.
