Introduction
The overall goal of dementia research is to make a difference to the lives of people with dementia or those that care for them. This may be either through prevention, treatment or improvements to care. To make the translation from research to practice, evidence is needed in the form of a clinical trial. However, there are many challenges facing clinical research. In this unit you will have an opportunity to examine in detail some of the clinical trials that are being performed in the dementia field and research the background that has lead to these trials. You will learn about the organization and planning that goes into running a clinical trial and discuss some of the ethical issues surrounding clinical trials in dementia. You will also learn what it means to be involved in a clinical trial and the difficulties facing clinical translation.
This is a core unit in the Bachelor of Dementia Care. This unit is also available to students from other courses, subject to meeting any prerequisites.
