Introduction

Communities are complex and connected social arrangements of people. In this unit, you will explore the different meanings of community, the diverse mechanisms to work with and for communities, and the processes and principles of community development and engagement. This will provide the foundations for appreciating the importance of citizen informed and driven participatory methods, as well as the role of volunteers. Due to Australia’s ageing population, the primary focus will be placed on the needs of older peoples, though the principles, practices and case studies examined in this unit will be applicable across multiple population groups. The knowledge developed through this unit will give you the skills to become an agent of change in developing and building meaningful and inclusive community relationships that foster community empowerment.
